Fighting Monsanto

Fighting Monsanto

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2010, 86 percent of the corn planted in the United States was a GE, as was 93 percent of the cotton and 93 percent of the soybeans. A GE seed is a seed whose genetic material has been directly manipulated by humans in a way that could not occur in nature. This usually involves isolating a gene sequence from one organism (such as a bacterium) and inserting it into the genome of another (such as a soybean seed). Chemical and biotechnology corporation Monsanto produces the technology for 90 percent of the world’s genetically engineered seeds.
